Reasons to Support George Phillips and His Fight Against the Fairness Doctrine

A Principled Conservative in a Competitive District

gp_headshot_crop

George Phillips believes the solutions to todays problems lay in cutting taxes to create jobs, fighting government waste and out of control spending, and promoting traditional family values.

The Phillips-Hinchey race in NY’s 22nd sprawls across eight counties in Upstate New York and the Hudson Valley. New York State as a whole trends Democrat because of the high percentage of Democrats in New York City, but Upstate New York has many Republican strongholds, including many rural and suburban areas in this district. If Phillips is able to gain several of New York’s third party endorsements — he was both the Republican and Conservative Party’s nominee in 2008 — voter registration numbers in the district would be virtually even.

A Liberal, Out of Touch Incumbent

Despite the fact the New York’s 22nd District is a fairly moderate district, Maurice Hinchey is one of the most liberal Members of Congress. The Fairness Doctrine isn’t the only issue he has taken an extreme stand on.

Consider the following:

  • A 98% rating by the ACLU — one of the highest in Congress
  • A 100% rating from NARAL Pro-choice America
  • A vote against a resolution to honor the 9/11 victims on September 11, 2004
  • A vote against basic diplomatic measures to keep Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons

Ethics have also become an issue for Hinchey. Ethics problems include:

  • Being arrested with a gun at an airport in the 1990’s
  • Leasing a BMW and charging it to his taxpayer account
  • Recently taking over $200,000 in lobbyist paid trips — including a $20,000 trip to Germany — and being labeled a “Junket Junkie” by the NY Post
  • Facing charges for allegedly striking a man in the head last year

A Strong Challenger

As a teacher with a young family who also worked as a top Congressional aide to Congressman Chris Smith, the then Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee and Vice Chairman of the House International Relations Committee, Phillips has a strong background.

Phillips challenged Hinchey in 2008 and gained the support of national conservative leaders like Jack Kemp and Rick Santorum. In public debates, Phillips performed incredibly well causing Hinchey to become extremely irate and lose control in their final debate.

In the end, a lack of resources and the national Democratic wave were simply too much for Phillips but his performance gained him respect throughout the district and laid the groundwork for a 2010 run.

Sending a Message Against the Fairness Doctrine

Sending money to Phillips will send a strong message to Hinchey and other liberal leaders in Congress that his continued push to impose the Fairness Doctrine and restrict basic freedoms will not be tolerated.

Bernie Sanders, the former Socialist mayor from Vermont who is now a US Senator and sponsor of legislation. He may be unbeatable in liberal Vermont but Maurice Hinchey certainly is not in Upstate New York.

With the necessary resources, Phillips will be able to get his message out of reducing out of control spending in Washington, lifting the tax burden off the backs of every day Americans and fighting for traditional, common sense values. He will also be able to highlight Hinchey’s extremely liberal, out of touch record on the Fairness Doctrine and other issues.
